Border Blocks Pix

BORDER BLOCKS

You will need fat quarters or 1/2 yards of border prints. Jinny Beyer borders work best because they have a right and left design. Neutral background fabric(s)

This is a great pattern to use with your left over border prints. It is the old traditional Baby Block pattern. You will need 4 quarter diamonds ( template) for each diamond and three diamonds for each Border Block.

First choose the place on your fabric that you want to use. Place the outside edge of the template on the straight grain of the fabric. I like to use one of the stripes for the outside edge to give a frame effect but it isn't necessary. Mark 2 IDENTICAL patches with the template. Don't forget to add your seam allowance before cutting out. Cut 2 more using the reverse side of the template. Make sure it is placed on the exact same design as the other two. Marking part of the design on the right side of the template allows you to align it properly when you reverse it.

for the template, which you can right click on the picture and save it to your hard drive.

Carefully pin the patches together, placing your pins to allign the designs. Sew.

When your diamonds are complete , lay them out until you are happy with the placement. The illusion is best when there is light, medium, and dark diamonds in each Baby Block. These should always be placed in the same orientation. IE: the lights always on top with the darks on the left and the mediums on the right.

Sew the Border Blocks together. You will have to set in the blocks. If you have trouble piecing them together because there are too many points coming together, add a small sashing strip between the blocks. You can make as many blocks as you wish, just keep stacking them up.

Finishing directions: The easiest way to finish this quilt is to applique the block pile onto a background.

I used the same template and scrap pieces of background neutrals to square it up. You can also make another template by doubling the one below to form a complete equilateral triangle. This cuts the number of pieces needed to finish up.

Add a border and quilt as desired.
